Hangover tips

Let’s face it, drinking alcohol is guaranteed when it’s the bank holiday weekend. Everyone has the Sunday off, and we all can’t help but get giddy and dance the night away.

For the past year now, I have suffered with extreme hangovers after I have been out. So much so, that I actually stopped drinking for 4 months of last year. After a night out, I would experience illness and anxiety (which is enough to stop you doing anything). You have all probably figured out by now that I am addicted to my 3-4 litres of water a day. I think my body, on a night out, was going into shutdown mode from the lack of water in my system. I would wake up after a great night, with enough problems to make me physically dread the next event I had to attend. The typical answer is to just not drink, but in a lot of social situations you feel obliged too. Otherwise you feel left out and don’t have the same energy as the others drinking. My tips to make a drinking session easier on the body and mind are simple and easy!

STEP ONE:

For every alcoholic drink you have, have a glass of water. I’ve been doing this for years, and it works wonders! Some people view this tactic as ridiculous, since the aim is to get extremely drunk. But for me, that’s never been my aim. I just like having a drink with my friends, I don’t need to feel 'off my face' to have a good time.

STEP TWO:

Ditch the straw. There are many reasons we should do this anyway, from helping the environment, to helping our hangovers. Using a straw gets you drunker quicker. If you’re like me (a light weight) you’ll prefer to casually drink, without the rush others have to feel instantly drunk. The straw creates a vacuum, which eliminates oxygen. The straw also, makes us drink faster!

STEP THREE:

Cut up some water melon! Before you head out, prepare chunks of water melon for your recovery the next day. Water melon is 92% water; so it is the perfect solution to a dry mouth/ insides. When I’m hungover, I struggle to drink fluids the next day, so this tip is a dream for me.

STEP FOUR:

Quit with the wine. I call these hangovers “wine head.” Did you know that for every glass of white wine we have: our bodies expel up to 1,000 ml of water?! This also takes out our electrolytes; such as, magnesium. Eating foods rich in magnesium before bed time can help us in the morning also.

STEP FIVE:

Milk thistle tablets! My boyfriend's mum introduced me to these beautys. After a night of drinking, our livers are exhausted. Silymarin is the main ingredient in these tablets, which is both an anti inflammatory and antioxidant.  You can get them here!

STEP SIX:
None of these steps will speed up the detox process. The body has its own natural detoxication process (our livers) and no food, or substance can hurry that along. Just remember to take everything step by step, and if you don’t feel like drinking... don’t do it.

I hope you’re not all too rough this bank holiday and my little tips help you through the weekend.
